The launch of these initiatives supports the branding of the PCCC as a Pacific Centre of Excellence for climate change information, capacity building and training, research, and innovation and further reaffirms the commitment of the Secretariat in supporting the ongoing efforts of its member countries to address the impacts of climate change and charter a safer and more sustainable future for the people of the Pacific.
The UNFCCC 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) will be held from the 31 October to the 19 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The COP27 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, this year is a critical year for the Pacific to be present to advocate for a strong reduction of emissions. The recent IPCC report has also highlighted that immediate action in the coming decade is the last chance the world has to avoid the worst impacts of climate change
The Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC) and the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center (OECC), Japan will be hosting a side event at the COP26 Japan Pavilion titled, “Strengthened Resilience to Climate Change in the Pacific - From Capacity Building to Climate Investment”. This event will be held on 3 November 2021 (Wednesday) from 10:30am – 12:00pm UK time (UTC +0).
This side event aims to showcase the outstanding outcomes of the training programs of adaptation, mitigation, and access to climate finance delivered by the PCCC and lessons learned on how those various programmes have built adaptive capacity to increase climate investment in the Pacific. It will also provide opportunities to seek future partnerships and funding in order to explore innovative tools, methodologies, and approaches relevant for the Pacific to enhance climate resilience through successful ‘building back better’ from disasters and COVID-19 and to adapt to protect communities and natural habitats in line with the goal of the COP26.
