Journey to COP27: Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion and Pacific Delegation Office strengthens climate action tool

25 NOVEMBER 2022

The push for a strong Pacific voice and an even stronger presence to drive ambitious climate action at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt from 6 - 18 November 2022, has been enhanced with the announcement of the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion and the Pacific Delegation Office.

The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion will provide a platform or fono for talanoa and knowledge-sharing on issues important to the Pacific especially advocacy for ambitious climate action and the need for financing. The Pacific Delegation Office is a dedicated space for Pacific delegations to host meetings with partners and strategise their negotiation approaches.

The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion and the Pacific Delegation Office, at COP27 is a Pacific partnership with Aotearoa New Zealand managed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Change Ambassador Kay Harrison said “Our support for this shared Pacific space at COP shows again we stand with our whānau in the Pacific in the face of the climate change crisis. Together it’s where we make loud and clear our call for global action, including increased finance, for our future security, prosperity and well-being.”

The Director General of SPREP, Mr Sefanaia Nawadra expressed the Secretariat’s appreciation to the New Zealand Government for their continued partnership and support.

“Climate change remains the single greatest existential threat facing the Blue Pacific and COP27 is the designated forum for Pacific negotiators to emphasise the urgency of limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5°C or below,” he said.

“SPREP is here to support the Pacific’s united call for ambitious global action to limit global warming in order for us to secure the future of our Pacific communities. The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion and the Pacific Delegation Office are a key part of ensuring the Pacific’s voice is heard and considered as we work towards the needed global action to address climate change.”

In September, ahead of COP27, negotiators from 14 Pacific Islands met in Samoa to strengthen the Pacific’s positions on thematic areas at the negotiations. The Pacific’s priority thematic areas are Adaptation, Mitigation and Ambition, Article 6 on Markets and Non-market approaches, Finance, Loss and Damage, Oceans, Global Stocktake, Capacity Building and Technology, Gender, and Transparency.

The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion is a 250 sqm space located within the blue zone, to showcase Pacific climate change leadership, actions and challenges as the Pacific islands strive for resilience in face of climate change impacts.

More than 70 side events will be hosted at the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion, providing a platform for Pacific people to tell their stories.  These will be live-streamed to allow those beyond the COP venue to be a part of these events, sharing our Pacific experiences across the world.

The Pacific Delegation Office is 45 sqm in size and is co-located with the Aotearoa New Zealand and Tokelau Office in the Blue Zone.  The office is a quiet space which allows Pacific delegations to hold coordination meetings and bilateral meetings.

The two spaces will be a “home away from home” for Pacific Island delegates, allowing them to talanoa, share the “Pacific” and build networks with other regions and international counterparts.
