A key conclusion of the Public Forum on the Paris Agreement on Climate Change this month, was that all organisations and experts in the region have to work together to ensure that the Paris Agreement is ratified and effectively implemented by Pacific Island Countries.

SPREP is currently developing a regional support programme to that end, to provide assistance in developing adaptation and mitigation measures and comply with their obligations under the new Agreement.

The Forum was coordinated by the Pacific Islands Development Forum and the University of the South Pacific partnered with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the European Union. (EU)PREP was invited to participate, with Dr. Netatua Pelesikoti presenting on technology and capacity building in the agreement and Espen Ronneberg covering mitigation. The keynote address was delivered by the Honourable Enele Sopoaga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, who outlined the challenges faced in Paris, but ultimately concluded that the region got the best deal that we could have expected.

The forum engaged students, diplomats, NGOs and the private sector in discussion with national and regional experts, and was broadcast to all USP campuses in the region.
